Finding the Best Running Playlists

November 13th, 2009

running 2Having the right music is sometimes a big part of preparing for a training run or a race. I find listening to music when I run to be the perfect accompaniment without being a distraction. The right song will get me pumped up and into a good rhythm with my pacing.

Even though the New York Road Runner’s discourage headphone use during their races, I listened to my iPod during most of the NYC marathon earlier this month. (I’m a rebel, baby!)

A few people have inquired as to what I had on my playlist, so here’s a list of some of the tracks that got me through those 26.2 miles:

  • Thanks for sharing your playlist, Rachael--we have similar taste in music. Nice old school Queensryche, btw. I was actually just planning another post about this very same topic! (Not Queensryche--running playlists.) Look for it in the coming week.

  • I look forward to it! Great site, by the way: content and design!
  • Thanks, Rachael! If you're on facebook don't forget to join my fan page.
  • Mike Lieberman
I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't run with an iPod. If I were to run w music it would likely be some Rob Zombie or Pantera possibly some Kelly Clarkson or Natasha Bedingfield.
  • Kelly Clarkson is my girl!
  • Rosalie
    Site looks great. Yay, Al.
  • Thanks!!
  • My favorites, at the moment:

    - Empire State of Mind and Run This Town (Jay-Z)
    - Daylight (Matt & Kim)
    - Paper Planes - DFA Remix (M.I.A.)
    - Money Makes the World Go Round (Chemistry)
    - Uprising (Muse)
    - The Royal We (Silversun Pickups)
    - Shove It - KMFX remix (Santogold)

I also run to a lot of guilty pleasure music that I ordinarily wouldn't listen to. Cardio just calls out for candy-coated pop and danceclub music.

    - I Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas)
    - Just Dance (Lady GaGa)
    - Evacuate the Dancefloor (Cascada)
    - Forever (Chris Brown)
    - S.O.S. (Let the Music Play) (Jordin Sparks)

I like to warm up to Training Montage by Vince DiCola, from the Rocky IV soundtrack (the most underrated of the Rocky movies, in my opinion). For my Power Song, I have iTunes configured to jump to 0:33 of 'Till I Collapse by Eminem & Nate Dogg. It's what I've listened to when I've crossed the finish line of every race I've ever run.

I agree with Dan about Rocky IV being widely underrated. It's from a different time and cannot be understood by todays standards. But I'd have to say that Rocky V is the MOST underrated in my opinion. I'm a fan of all the Rocky films, but I caught Rocky I on the USA network recently and was blown away by the training scenes. Here it is in the late 70's and you got Stallone doing one-handed plyo-pushups--an excercise that many consider to be new or contemporary. Also, for a great Clean and Press training scene check out Rocky VI.
  • No arguments about the Rocky movies over here--I even liked the last one! There are definitely some amazing training sequences in all of them. I'll have to watch out for those one handed plyo-pushups next time.

Word up Dan. The gym I used to go to always played 80s pop. I loved it for real. There is never a bad time for Debarge's "Rhythm of the Night"
  • Hey Dan--nice list! I just checked out that Muse track and I dug it. I've used other Muse tracks on running playlists before.

My favorite musical genres are rock and metal but I agree about pop music being great for cardio.
