Depth Jumps and One Legged Depth Jumps

A one legged depth jump requires focus.

A one legged depth jump requires focus.

Depth jumps are a great plyometric exercise, but I rarely see people doing them at the gym. I can only assume that it hasn’t occurred to the average gym goer, because they are a great workout and a lot of fun!

After all, who wouldn’t want to leap down off a high platform and immediately rebound onto another? (Not too high of a platform though, remember it’s a depth jump not a death jump!)

Depth jumps are one of the best ways to increase athletic performance and, like all plyometric exercises, they take advantage of the elasticity of your muscles.

Just like a basketball bouncing off the ground, you get more momentum going into your jump when you rebound off the ground from another platform.

You guessed it, the higher the step you jump from, the more potential you’ll have for a high rebound. The depth jump is already a fairly advanced exercise on its own, but if you want to really take things to the next level you can try to do it on one leg!

For safety purposes, make sure to use a surface that can absorb some of the shock, such as a rubberized floor or a suspended wood floor. Also, avoid locking out your knees when landing.
