The Devil Wears Nike

March 25th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

For as long as I can recall, Nike has been the most popular and widely recognized producer of athletic footwear and apparel in the world.

Despite annual profits that are in the billions, however, they continue to utilize sweatshop labor–employing children and paying workers as little as $2.50 per DAY to work in their factories.

On top of that, their products are poorly designed and fall apart relatively quickly. If they are cutting costs on the labor end, imagine the costs they cut on the materials themselves. Besides, I wouldn’t feel inclined to do a bang-up job if I was a 12-year-old working for only a quarter an hour either!

As you may recall, Nike came under fire in the late 1990’s after their use of sweatshop labor became public knowledge. At the time, Nike CEO Philip Knight spoke publicly about plans to improve factory conditions, but it would seem that those claims were merely a public relations ploy. Nike’s actions continue to show a disregard for human rights.

So what can you do to help end this injustice?

STOP BUYING NIKE PRODUCTS!!!

Boycotting Nike will not only help to eradicate this situation, but if you switch to another brand, you will likely be purchasing a superior quality product as well. It’s a no-brainer!

I know their sneakers might look appealing, but that is exactly how the devil works–luring you in with something pretty, while hiding the ugly truth somewhere far from sight.

Here are some links with more info on Nike’s sweatshop labor practices:

    Good Post Al!

Corporate America is selling its soul in order to increase it's profits. The only way we can possibly deter their bad labor/business practices is by calling them out on it. Did anyone pay attention to the 2 day investor meeting Pepsi held at Yankee stadium this week? They are now claiming their soft drinks and snacks(Frito-Lay) are actually healthy choices???? I've worked 17 years at Frito Lay and am now on disibilty with dilated cardiomyopathy from the stress and workload of my job. Sweatshop labor right here in America! Of course they have turned there back on the benefits they owe me. How can a company that does'nt take care of its own claim to care about the health of the public in general.

I will not wear Nike and I won't buy Pepsi products!

    Hey John,
Glad to hear you are joining the Nike boycott! I haven't had a Pepsi in a very long time and don't worry–I don't expect to again any time in the foreseeable future. As a general rule, if a food makes claims of being healthy (i.e. – low fat, sugarfree, etc.), it usually means they're trying to compensate for something else.

People like us need to keep spreading the word and fighting the good fight. Corporate America is a powerful adversary, but there is strength in numbers!

Thanks for reminding and making us aware of Nike's labor practices. Especially since it's so easy to just buy a different brand.

You're welcome, Sarah! Thanks for helping support the cause.

Are you aware of any brands of sneakers that don't use sweat shop labor?

  • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

Sadly, this is quite a poignant comment, Jennifer.

I came across this link with info about different companies that manufacture athletic apparel and their labor policies. http://www.clearingthehurdles.org/response-chart

If you go by that chart, it would seem Adidas treats their workers the best.

Thought provoking post. See the youtube link below for Nike's attempt to buy a public park in Tokyo and get rid of the homeless people who seek refuge there. Sad.

This is sad but what's sadder is the fact that it doesn't surprise me. Corporations like Nike are always putting money first.
