Street Workout

Spring is in full bloom here in NYC and there’s never been a better time for an outdoor training session.

With that in mind, my brother Danny and I spent the better part of the day yesterday strolling around lower Manhattan getting our reps in on anything and everything we could find.

We hit the bars at a few different neighborhood playgrounds and also made use of construction scaffolding and whatever else we came across.

We practiced push-ups, pull-ups, dips, pistol squats, human flags and lots of other challenging moves, once again demonstrating that you don’t need a gym or any fancy equipment to get a great full-body workout.

      Hi Al,

I have just really gotten in to body weight training and I love it. I am 33 5’11 203 (this after losing 70lb) been doing bodyweight training for about 8 months and was wondering if you thought it was feasible to get to some of your cool advanced tricks like flags and levers starting to train this “late” in life.

      Matt

PS i am in no hurry I just want to set my goals to be attainable. Before this training (almost obsession now) didn’t do much strength training at all.

You’ll probably need to drop more weight before you’re gonna get a flag but it’s never too late to get crazy strong!  Have you seen these guys?  http://www.alkavadlo.com/2011/09/never-too-old-to-workout/

Thanks for the response. I plan to drop some more weight and that video gives me some more motivation to get there. I am currently doing convict conditioning and am going to buy your book when it comes out in paper back in June. I am going to try my first handstand soon but want to get in a few more 90 degree pike pushup sessions first. Got the headstand down and can do crow for 20 sec. Can’t wait!! Thanks for the site love it!!

       Matt,
I never trained for a flag until I was 33 either.  33 is not “late” in life.  It’s time to get strong!

I don’t really think its late either but I was more thinking in terms   of having no base fitness level and getting there. Thanks for the reply the more cool stuff you guys show the more motivation I get.

      Hi Al and Danny,

love your stuff and love your ‘do it anywhere’ ethos. No equipment is no excuse.Like everyone keeps saying, really, really inspirational!!!

It depends on whether or not I’m being strict with the form.  If I am being strict, it’s around 25, with kipping it’s a lot more.

Great video!  It’s good that the summer is almost here.  By the way, I finally am able to do more tricks on the bar like the pullover, L sit pull ups and the garman hang.  But I still cannot do the muslce up yet I am getting really close.  I think a couple of months later I will also be able to do the move. It has almost been 10 months since I started calisthenics, and I cannot belive how my body shape changed in a good way and how I became strong on the bar when compared to when I first started this sports.  Thank you!
