The raised heel gives you better leverage. I discuss this phenomenon in more detail in my new book, Pushing The Limits!

I am having a hard time with pistol.

I am doing bench pistols now (3 sets 8 per side). I need help getting lower.

    Should I:

    1. Get up on the bench

    2. Use some assistance (hold on to something)

    3. use a lower box.

    Thanks so much

Those are all viable ways to progress! If you have a lower box, try that first – otherwise start experimenting with the other methods.

I also suggest the isometric approach. Try holding the bottom position of the pistol for time. Also, try holding the middle position, where your thigh is parallel to the floor. You can also try a 1 leg wall sit for time. All of the suggestions mentioned here should make the pistol more manageable.

Personally, I always hold my free foot with one of my hands when doing pistols in workouts, because, to me, it’s easier to not fall over this way, however it lets you control the balance better so if you do it properly the pistol can be made more difficult from a strength perspective.

You should also try shrimp squats. Interestingly, shrimps are actually harder with shoes on and easier barefoot; the opposite of pistols.
