Work Out With Al

Bootcamp @ Tompkins Square Park
Throughout the spring and summer, I’ll be conducting outdoor bootcamp-style workout classes every Saturday morning at 10am at Tompkins Square Park.

Each class meets for 50 minutes and provides a full-body strength and conditioning workout. Classes will resume on Saturday, May 4. Contact me if you are interested in attending.

PCC
The PCC is the world’s first ever Progressive Calisthenics Certification. Geared toward fitness professionals (and enthusiasts) who want a crash course in calisthenics, this three day intensive workshop will prepare you to build a better body by using just your own bodyweight for resistance.

Click here for more information and to see upcoming dates of PCC workshops.

Personal Training
I am currently accepting personal training clients in the NYC area for one-on-one sessions.

I am available to train you in your home, or at one of several private training facilities in Manhattan, including Nimble Fitness in Union Square. I am also happy to train you outdoors at a local park. Contact me for more information on personal training.

      Hey Al,

Where on the site can you register? Is it still open?

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

Hey Gil, there are still a couple of slots open for the bootcamp at NY Jiu-jitsu (assuming that’s what you’re asking about). You can register in person at NYJJ or by telephone (not sure if they are open today). The number for the studio is (212) 343- 8310. Talk to Ed or Sean.

      Al,

I just “graduated” from P90X….yeah….it was beneficial in that it took me way out of my comfort zone….and my two kids are now fit-conscious.

one question with pull ups….I find my grip/forearms giving out before I think I’m done…any ideas?

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

Practice just hanging at the bottom position of a pull-up for time.  You should aim to work up to holding that for at least two minutes.  There’s actually a nice section in Convict Conditioning 2 about grip training.  You should consider getting a copy: http://www.dragondoor.com/shop-by-department/books/b59/?apid=4e8cb1ea167b0

Hi al! How many days a week can I do pull ups without overtraining?

Hi al! How many days a week can I do pull ups without overtraining?

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

It really depends on several factors.  This question will be addressed in depth in my next book, which will be out in the spring.  I’m going to keep you in suspense til then!

    • Aatif Naziri

I just got your ebook and read most of it, pretty interesting stuff  I have started on CC workouts and have been doing KBs for a few years  You do mention running, so I am thinking of adding running to my training. Do you run outside in winter or do you use a treadmill? Any tips for running in the windy city in January, should I brave the weather or should I join a gym to run on treadmill?

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

Hey Aatif – Glad you enjoyed my book.  I am not a fan of the treadmill and  I do in fact recommend outdoor running year-round.  I made a blog post about running in the cold a while back.  Here’s the link: http://www.alkavadlo.com/2009/11/cold-weather-running-tips/

    • Tymurds

Off topic because I’m not sure if you check old articles: Al, what are some suggestions for human flag progressions?

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

Do a search.  Ive blogged about the human flag on many occasions.

    • Denis

Out of curiosity what are your bench, squat, etc like?

Why do you not gain more muscle(because you are damn strong)?

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

I haven’t benched in years but I imagine I could still rep out with 225.  My PR on a barbell back squat is 300 (ass to the grass).

As for my lack of mass, I have a small frame and I don’t eat that much.

    • Branl

Al, how can I avoid a big chest?  I do pressups but I have seen some pretty big chests out there!!
I was GTG grease the grooves on pressups with 5 minutes rest between..will that stop me from bulking my chest up to much…?

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

Has this been a problem for you in the past?  Sounds like an irrational concern to me.

    • Branl

lol you may be right Al, but just dont want to much of a big chest..

I enjoyed the workout last Saturday. Still sore and in pain today Monday. Feels good. thanks.

    • http://www.AlKavadlo.com/ Al Kavadlo

If it feels good then it’s not pain!  Glad you liked the workout, Frank.
